Home Care Treatment For Vitiligo

Our Specialist Dermatologists have developed a tailored home care programme to support patients with vitiligo in their home. Our home care programme for vitiligo provides information on how to use over the counter products and prescription medication at home for maximal effect, as well as important discussion and thought support information for patients and their families. Each of our packs are designed to travel with you throughout the seasons, and provide practical guidelines and products, as well as provide ongoing support for social situations and family discussions.

Home Care Basics

You will need to learn how to take care of your skin that has lost pigment in a different way that you have been used to.

Taking care to minimise cuts and grazes is important, as these are traumas that can trigger the onset of vitiligo in those areas. Wearing long sleeves and long pants can really help with that if you are not living in a hot climate.

In the shower, try to have cool, short showers, that are less likely to strip the oils from your skin.

Use a soap free wash. Pat your skin dry, don’t scrub at it…it’s sensitive like that.

Wear sunscreen on the areas that have lost pigment, as they will burn much more easily that you are used to. This in turn also creates trauma, which is not good for helping your vitiligo.

Let’s Talk

We find it is very important part of treatment to discuss the social and self esteem concerns associated with vitiligo. They are a very real and common part of this condition, and the more we can own it and learn how to process our feelings around it, the better you will feel. Developing a good support network at home is very important for all patients.

Prescription Medications

Your specialist will have prescribed medications as a first line and ongoing part of your treatment program. It is important to use your prescription medications as prescribed. They really will help!

Makeup Options

Some women find it can be helpful to use camouflage makeup to minimise the appearance of vitiligo while undergoing treatment. We have some excellent camouflage makeup options that are 100% mineral, will let your skin breathe naturally, and provide great coverage at the same time.

Sleep

We always mention sleep, as it is one of the largest contributors to mental and physical health and healing. Get a good night’s sleep to help your body restore and repair. 8 hours a night is recommended for all adults, and more in children.
